Public housing

Renewal

Subject to continuing eligibility and a satisfactory tenancy history, you will be offered an extension on your fixed-term lease at the expiry of your current lease term. Tenants over the age of 55 years may remain in public housing even if they fail to meet the eligibility criteria, but will be required to pay market rent.

In general fixed-term leases will be extended as follows:

  • a new two-year lease will be offered to tenants satisfactorily completing a six-month lease
  • a new five-year lease will be offered to tenants satisfactorily completing a two-year lease
  • a new five-year lease will be offered to tenants satisfactorily completing a five-year lease.

A one-year lease period may apply to tenants who are participating in the Employment Incentive Scheme.

A revised property condition report will be completed prior to a house being re-allocated.

If your lease is not being extended, you will receive a notification letter, giving you a minimum of 14 days to vacate the dwelling on the day the lease expires. Territory Housing will endeavour to give you sufficient notice to provide a reasonable period of time in which to find alternate accommodation.

For further information read the Operations policy manual or contact your local Territory Housing office.
