Minister for Lands, Planning and Environment Peter Chandler said the crown land was sold at auction this week to local company Asbuild NT Pty Ltd.


Alice Springs home-buyers in Alice Springs are being urged to get in quick and register their interest in the newly refurbished John Gorey Apartments in Elliott Street which are about to go on sale.

“The Country Liberals Government is helping low to middle income earners in Alice Springs achieve their dream of buying their own home,” said Chief Minister Adam Giles.


The Country Liberals Government is continuing to combat the Territory’s housing crisis and drive down the cost of living through developing infill sites and fast tracking land release.

The Northern Territory recorded above average growth in residential building approvals in 2013 according to data released today by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).

Treasurer Dave Tollner said the number of residential building approvals in the Territory during 2013 increased by 19.9 per cent to 2299.


The redevelopment of the John Gorey Apartments in Elliott Street, Alice Springs is progressing fast and has been a hive of activity since work began on the public housing complex in late October.

“Over the past few weeks all 30 units have been prepared and made ready for refurbishment works to commence,” Chief Minister Adam Giles said.

“So far, at its busiest, Elliott Street has had up to 56 workers onsite and the apartments are on track to be completed in early 2014 delivering a much needed boost to affordable housing stock in Alice Springs, which is a key priority of the Country Liberals Government.


Minister for Housing Matt Conlan has announced the winners of the Territory Housing Garden Competition for the Top End.

“This competition is an opportunity to reward public housing tenants throughout the Territory who take great pride in looking after their home and gardens,” Mr Conlan said.

“This year we had 60 tenants enter the competition from Darwin, Palmerston, Katherine, Tennant Creek, Nhulunbuy and Alice Springs.

“It’s great to see so many tenants devote their time and energy into creating beautiful gardens, setting an important example for other public housing tenants to follow.


The first eight brand new affordable rental dwellings under the Country Liberals Government’s Real Housing for Growth head-lease initiativeare now ready for rent in Tennant Creek.

Minister for Housing, Matt Conlan, said the rental properties will be available at 30 per cent below market rent rates.

“This project is an excellent example of how the Country Liberals Government is working with the private sector to increase the supply of affordable housing with an aim to deliver 2000 new homes across the Territory over the next four years,” Mr Conlan said.


Minister for Senior Territorians Peter Styles helped spread some early Christmas cheer this morning while visiting Gorden and Marie Hargrave in their Wagaman home.

Mr Styles delivered the first of more than 2400 Christmas cakes to senior Northern Territory public housing tenants.

“Around half of our public housing tenants are seniors so this is a great opportunity to spread some Christmas cheer and good will,” Mr Styles said.

“I know many of Territory Housing’s senior tenants take great pride in looking after their homes – so this is a thank you for their efforts.

“I’m sure the traditional Lions Christmas cakes will be enjoyed by everyone and I wish all our seniors a safe and happy Christmas.”


Minister for Housing Matt Conlan today announced the Territory Housing complex know as ‘John Gorey Apartments’ in Elliott Street, Alice Springs, is undergoing major renewal as part of the Territory Government’s Real Housing for Growth plan.

“This Government is finding solutions to meet the town’s housing requirements by bridging the gap for residents who are struggling to find suitable housing,” Mr Conlan said.

“These apartments have had a chequered history of anti-social behaviour but that’s now in the past with the renewal intending to provide a much needed ‘boost’ to accommodation stock in the town when completed.”

Minister for Housing Matt Conlan has encouraged Territory Housing tenants to bring out their green thumbs and get involved in this year’s Public Housing Garden Competition.
Mr Conlan said the competition was now open and tenants had until Friday 25 October 2013 to submit their entries.
“This competition is an opportunity to reward our tenants who take great pride in looking after their home,” Mr Conlan said.
“Many tenants invest a lot of time and energy into creating beautiful and vibrant gardens for their homes and set a great example for others to follow.
